Puffy Royal Mattress Review | Sleepopolis

The Puffy Royal is the third bed from Puffy. It’s an all-foam, mattress-in-a-box that uses a mixture of memory and poly foams to create a balanced feel. The Puffy Royal is designed to be a luxury mattress, but is it really fit for royalty?

I’ve tested out the other two mattresses in the Puffy line (the original Puffy and the Puffy Lux), so I was curious to take the Puffy Royal for a spin. I ran it through the whole gamut of tests, and I’m excited to share my findings with you here!

Brand Summary

The Puffy Royal is the brainchild of the Puffy brand. All three of its memory foam mattresses are 100% manufactured in the USA, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, and CertiPUR-US certified. This means the beds meet certain safety and environmental standards, and the foams are free of ozone depleters, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and other harmful chemicals. The brand also sells bases, bedding, a nightstand, and even a dog bed.

In addition to the Puffy Royal, Puffy also makes the original Puffy and Puffy Lux mattresses. We’ll compare those beds to the Puffy Royal later on in this review. Before we do that, let’s get up close and personal with the Puffy Royal!

What Is the Puffy Royal Made Of?

The Puffy Royal is a 14” tall, all-foam mattress that features five layers of memory, poly foams, and a zoned support system. This construction creates a balanced feel of comfort and support. Sleepers should sink into the thick mattress for some body-contouring and pressure relief without missing out on spinal support.

Let’s dig deep (literally!) into the Puffy Royal!

Cover – First up is a thick cover with a polyester feel. It’s removable and machine-washable, so it’s easy to keep the mattress’s surface clean.

Comfort Layer – Next you’ll find a memory foam comfort layer. It has a slow response to pressure, allowing sleepers to sink in for some body-contouring and pressure relief. This gentle vibe could appeal to side sleepers, who want to avoid feeling jammed up at the shoulder. Also worth noting? This layer is infused with cooling beads, which might help dissipate some heat. (This is important because memory foam has a tendency to trap body heat.)

Reflex Layer – Beneath the memory foam comfort layer, there’s a layer of poly foam. This layer is approximately as soft as the memory foam above it, so it keeps the comfort train rolling. However, it does have a quicker response to pressure than the comfort layer, establishing some nice mobility so you won’t feel stuck in the bed.

Contouring Layer – Below the soft poly foam layer, there’s another layer of memory foam. Like the comfort layer, it has a slow response to pressure and offers some body-contouring and pressure relief. It also does a decent job of cutting down on motion transfer, which could appeal to couples who don’t want to feel each other’s movements during the night.

Transition Layer – Next up is a transition layer made from firmer poly foam with zoned support. It’s softer around the shoulders and firmer around the hips, which provides pressure relief for the upper body (especially while side sleeping) and helps keep the hips in line with the spine. This construction could appeal to back and side sleepers, who need a balance of pressure relief and support.

Base Layer – To finish things off, there’s a layer of firm, high-density poly foam at the base of the bed. This layer provides support for the entire mattress.

How Firm Is the Puffy Royal Mattress?

Now that we’ve peeked inside the Puffy Royal, we can make sense of how it feels to sleep upon it! Let’s kick things off by taking a look at this bed’s firmness.

First, a heads up: Firmness is a bit subjective. Your body weight, shape, size and personal preferences will all affect how firm a mattress feels to you – and the same is true for me! So keep in mind that my assessment is just one perspective.

Puffy Royal Mattress Firmness
I found the Puffy Royal to have a medium firmness level

After spending some time on the Puffy Royal, I ranked it around a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5, so the mattress is right around medium firm.

Knowing what’s inside the Puffy Royal helps us make sense of why it has a medium firm feel. The mattress combines soft memory foams with more supportive poly foams to create a balanced feel that’s right in the middle of the firmness scale. This could appeal to back and side sleepers, because both sleep positions require some pressure relief combined with enough support to maintain spinal alignment.

Testing the Puffy Royal Mattress

Firmness gives us important insights into a mattress, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. To really determine whether a bed is a good match for you, it’s important to consider Pressure Relief and Motion Transfer as well. So let’s do just that!

Pressure Relief

No, we’re not talking about easing up on pressures at work or school (if only!). The term “pressure relief” refers to a bed’s ability to alleviate tension at sensitive areas such as the hips, lower back, and shoulders. It tells you whether a mattress will ease pressure on relevant body parts so you can enjoy comfortable sleep in your preferred position.

To test the Pressure Relief on the Puffy Royal, I used a helpful tool called a pressure map. I position this device on top of the mattress, climb aboard, and let the map track my body’s force as I try different positions. Low-pressure areas are highlighted in blue, and the highest pressure areas show up as red.

Back – When lying on my back, I don’t notice any pressure points and I feel like my weight is evenly distributed. The zoned support helps keep my hips elevated and my spine aligned, while the memory foam lets me sink in for some body-contouring. This could be a great option for back sleepers.

Side – Thanks to the memory foam and the zoned support, my shoulder is able to sink in for some pressure relief. At the same time, my hips are elevated enough to keep my spine aligned. I think this could be a good option for side sleepers or combo sleepers who switch between their back and side.

Stomach – When I’m on my stomach, I’m not feeling any significant pressure points. But I’m also not feeling enough support. The comfort layers are a little too soft to keep my hips elevated in this position; as a result, my hips bow in and throw my spine out of alignment. My neck also feels uncomfortable here. Strict stomach sleepers will probably want a firmer mattress.

Motion Transfer

Like Pressure Relief, Motion Transfer can affect whether a mattress matches your sleep needs. This term refers to whether you’ll feel a sleeping partner’s movements if they shift around during the night. Knowing whether a mattress will help minimize motion transfer is especially important for folks who share a bed with a partner, child, or pet.

To test out motion transfer on the Puffy Royal, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches. These heights mimic various movements, from tossing and turning to getting out of bed or jumping on top of it. Next, I measured the disturbance caused by each of these drops. The bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance!

The Puffy Royal has multiple memory foam layers, and memory foam often does a good job of tamping down motion transfer. I expected this mattress to perform well on my tests, and for the most part it delivered. You’ll probably be disturbed by someone jumping into bed, but you shouldn’t feel a partner’s minor movements during the night.

Other Models

If you’re considering the Puffy Royal, then you might also be taking a look at the other mattresses in the Puffy line. So let’s compare the Puffy Royal to its siblings so you can see how they all stack up!

Original Puffy

  • Like the Puffy Royal, the original Puffy is an all-foam, bed-in-a-box mattress.
  • While the Puffy Royal has five layers, the original Puffy has only three (including a 2” memory foam comfort layer). The original doesn’t feel quite as sturdy or luxurious as the Puffy Royal, and it doesn’t allow for as much sinkage into the mattress.
  • Both mattresses have a similar firmness. I ranked both at a 6.5 out of 10, or right around medium firm. This firmness level tends to suit combo sleepers who switch between their back and side and could also work for strict back or side sleepers.
  • The original Puffy is much less expensive than the Puffy Royal, coming in at around one-third of the price.

Puffy Lux

  • Like the original Puffy and the Puffy Royal, the Puffy Lux is an all-foam mattress-in-a-box.
  • The Puffy Lux has a similar construction to the original Puffy, except it adds an extra layer of memory foam for a total of 4” of body-contouring comfort.
  • Thanks to the extra memory foam, the Puffy Lux is much softer than the other two Puffy mattresses. (I ranked it around a 5.5 out of 10.) The softness of the mattress lets sleepers sink in for some serious pressure relief. This mattress should be well suited to side sleepers who want contouring comfort and don’t want to feel “jammed up” around the shoulder.
  • In terms of price, the Puffy Lux lands right between the original Puffy and the Puffy Royal. You can save an additional $300 on this mattress by using the code SLEEPOPOLIS300.

Is Puffy, Puffy Lux or Puffy Royal Better?

It depends on your taste, sleep position, and budget. For instance, back and side sleepers will probably like the feel of the original Puffy or the Puffy Royal. Folks who want a more luxurious feel might want the Puffy Royal, while people who are looking for a cheaper mattress will appreciate the original Puffy. Strict side sleepers will probably like the softer Puffy Lux.

How long does it take for Puffy to expand?

All bed-in-a-box mattresses (such as the Puffy) take at least overnight to expand to their full size, and they might continue expanding for two or three days. We recommend waiting at least a few hours or overnight before sleeping on the mattress.

Can you flip a Puffy mattress?

No. Due to the way the layers are arranged, the firmer layers are on the bottom. If you flip the mattress, it will drastically change its feel. To minimize wear, rotate the mattress 180 degrees every few months.

Do Puffy mattresses need a box spring?

No, a box spring isn’t necessary. Puffy mattresses are designed to work on slatted or flat frames. That said, if you already have a box spring that you like, feel free to place the Puffy on top.
